About the Book

This is the original first translation of Imam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyy’s work Tibbu Nabawi, which is a unique insight into God’s messenger’s use of natural medicine with complete reference to the Qur’an and the prophetic Hadith. Includes a concise dictionary of materia medica.

Knowledge of medicine flourished in the Islamic caliphate between the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century C.E., and the European Renaissance in the 15th century. However, the surge of Islamic medical institutions began during the 9th century C.E., and coincided with the golden age of the ‘Abbasid Caliphate in the East (749-1258 C.E.). This sea of knowledge which flowed for nearly four centuries was halted later on by the Mongolian invasion of the Eastern Caliphate and the eclipse of the Western Caliphate in Spain.

In these days when there is a great spirit of Islamic revivalism, many Islamic scholars and researchers have gone back to the wisdom of the ancient Muslim scholars. This book is an example in particular. Most of the Muslim physicians, if not all, are aware of the golden era of Islamic medicine that lasted for more than one thousand years. The contributions that the Muslim physicians made during this time indeed laid the foundation stone of modern medicine. Unfortunately, not much is written or said in the books of history of medicine regarding the great discoveries and contribution that were made by Muslim physicians during this era. It is about time that the Muslim scholars and researchers rectified this and put the Muslim contribution in medicine in the proper place in the history of medicine.
