A Date-Palm-Tree In Jannah-Paradise

While Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was sitting with his companions, a young man who was orphan came with a complaint, he said: “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) I was building a fence around my garden but a date-palm tree that belonged to my neighbor prevented the fence from being straight, so I went to my neighbor and asked him to give it to me so that I can complete the fence, but he refused, I then asked him to sell it to me, and again he refused…” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) then asked for the man’s neighbor Lubaba bin Abdul Munthir to come, when he came, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) spoke of the issue and asked the man to either let go with the date-palm tree or sell it to his neighbor. The man refused to both proposals. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) then said: “Sell him the tree and get a reward of a date-palm tree in Jannah-paradise that will take a rider one hundred years to cross under its shade”.  The present companions were amazed by the extremely irresistible offer, for who can have such a date-palm tree, and what does a date-palm tree in this world means by comparison to a date-palm tree in Jannah-paradise!…. Again, the man refused to sell it.

At that point, one of the companions called Abi-Dahdaah (t) asked: “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), if I buy the date-palm tree from this man and donate it to the young orphan, will I get a date-palm tree in Jannah-paradise?” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied “Yes.” Abi-Dahdaah (t) then turned to the man and said to him: “O man, do you know my plantation?” The man replied, “Yes, I do, and who in Medina does not know the plantation of Abi-Dahdaah which has six hundred date-palm trees, a big mansion and water well famous for its delicious refreshing water and the high wall surrounding it! The merchants of Medina compete to buy dates from the plantation of Abi-Dahdaah for its excellence and fine quality”. Abi-Dahdaah (t) then said to the man, “Would you accept to trade that tree for my entire plantation, the big mansion, the water well and the high walls surrounding it?”

The man looked at Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) in shock, not believing what he heard of such a deal, a six hundred date-palm trees against one single tree!… What a winning package deal by all measures. The man agreed to the bargain and made Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and the companions witnesses on the deal.

Abi-Dahdaah (t) rejoiced as he looked at the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), do I now have a date-palm tree in Jannah-paradise now?” Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied, “No!” Abi-Dahdaah (t) was shocked, but Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) continued, “Allah offered one date-palm tree for one date-palm tree, but you vied in quantity over what Allah (U) offered, and He (U) returned your generosity with His Holy Graciousness and Excellence by granting you an infinite number of palm plantations I cannot number them”. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) then repeated over and over: “What a countless date-palms plantations await Abi-Dahdaah! What a countless date-palms plantations await Abi-Dahdaah!”

A summary of the story was also reported by Imam Ahmad, Imam Ibn Hayyan and by Al-Hakim that Anas (t) may Allah be please with him, narrated that a man came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said to him that someone has a date-palm tree that stands against completing my wall fence, would you ask him to give it to me?” Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) then asked the man to give the date-palm tree to his neighbor for a date-palm tree in Jannah-paradise, but he refused. Abi-Dahdaah (t) then went to the man and offered him his entire plantation in trade for that tree. The man accepted. Abi-Dahdaah (t) then came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) I bought the tree with my plantation and I give it to you, (give the tree to the one who needed it)”. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) then repeated over and over: “What countless clusters of palm-dates await Abi-Dahdaah! What countless clusters of dates-palms await Abi-Dahdaah!”
